Are profiles removed from Google Ads and/or Meta when they leave a Spotler Activate audience?

Whether Spotler Activate actively removes a profile from a Google Ads or Meta audience depends on the export method. With the email export (a customer list of hashed email addresses), Spotler Activate sends a removal to Google Ads when a profile leaves the audience, and to Meta only when the profile still has email marketing consent. With an event-based export, Spotler Activate sends no removal: the profile stays in the Google Ads or Meta audience until the membership duration ends.

Spotler Activate can synchronize an audience to Google Ads and Meta in two ways: as an email export, which shares the email addresses of profiles in the audience as a customer list (in Google Ads: a Customer Match list), or as an event-based export. The table shows what happens when a profile no longer meets the audience conditions in Spotler Activate.

Export method Google Ads Meta
Email export Spotler Activate sends a removal and the profile is removed from the customer list. Spotler Activate sends a removal only when the profile still has email marketing consent at that moment.
Event-based export No removal is sent. The profile stays in the audience until the membership duration ends. No removal is sent. The profile stays in the audience until the membership duration ends.

For email exports to Meta, Spotler Activate applies the email consent filter to removals as well. If you use consent management and a customer withdraws email marketing consent, Spotler Activate may not remove this profile from the Meta audience. Why can a profile not be removed after its email address is deleted?

To remove a profile from a Google Ads or Meta customer list, Spotler Activate needs the profile's email address. If the email address has already been deleted from the profile in Spotler Activate, the removal cannot be sent and the profile stays in the customer list. Make sure a profile has been removed from the customer list before you delete its email address in Spotler Activate.

How do you limit how long a profile stays in an event-based audience?

For event-based exports to Google Ads and Meta, the only way to limit how long a profile stays in the audience is to set a shorter membership duration. For example, if a profile must be removed within one month, set a membership duration of 30 days or less.

  • Google Ads: the default membership duration is 30 days, with a maximum of 540 days.
  • Meta: the maximum membership duration is 180 days.
